The Single Payer Health Care Movement and the Plans of the Democratic Presidential Nominee

Thereafter, the text of my speech at the Take Back America Conference Panel on the theme “Health care debtor simple movement and plans for the Democratic Presidential nominee.” I was honored to be on the podium with Courtney Farr of the California Nurses Association, the Congress MP John Conyers, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee promoter and director of HR-676, the single payer for all Medicare Bill.

Most progressives agree that the Government has an important role to play in guaranteeing health care for all Americans, unlike most of those who wish to leave the Republicans with the man in the private market. But the conference also clear differences between the progressives on strategies for achieving universality of health care. For many years, most progressive took charge of the largest Medicare For All - a system in which all Americans have guarantees of health care from cradle to grave, funded by taxes on insurance premiums , and where medical decisions are made between patients and doctors, not by bureaucrats, private insurances. The campaign on America’s Future, sponsors of the conference, supports a compromise public-private hybrid, in which most people continue to receive private insurance by their employers, but also in businesses and uninsured people can also buy government in an alternative. Most versions of this plan, including support for Hillary Clinton, among others, an individual mandate, in which the collision are not by the government to buy health insurance, even if given the “choice” between insurance companies and the public.

This difference may split the progressive movement, when it comes to the reform of health systems. It was obviously more recently in California. A year ago, both houses of the legislature of California legislation that would have been a single payer for California’s 37 million of citizens, the veto of Republican Gov. Schwarzenegger. This year, some Democrats, led by California Assembly Speaker Nunez, trying to forge a compromise with Schwarzenegger for a term of insurance, as in Massachusetts, which provides, inter Mitt Romney. The compromise was seen by some progressives, including Andy Stern of the SEIU. It was defeated 8-1 in committee in the Senate, after the gradual movement of the majority of health care, including the California Nurses Association and the California One Care Coalition.

Progressive must be very careful not to let these differences undermine the movement for universal health care at the national level.

Here is the speech:
Before the establishment and President John Conyers Courtney Farr of the California Nurses Association, I would like to outline some principles of our discussion this afternoon on how to be progressive on health care, proposals on Major democratic presidential candidates.

First, if we have a democracy and a chairman of the Democratic Congress increased the majority laid down in November, we have the best opportunity to adopt universal health care in the United States since the Truman administration. If we shock, the loss of the possibility for another generation.

Secondly, this type of basic social change will never be from above. It calls for a mass movement to push below. If everything proves the story is that Washington adopt, the company can only be modified if inspired by the great social movements as the trade union movement, the civil rights movement, the women’s movement and anti - war movement. There is already a strong mass movement of unions, doctors, nurses, churches and municipal buildings for support organisations for all as a disease embodied in HR 676, sponsored by the chairman of Conyers. It is, I believe, more than 80 members of Congress co-sponsors - it’s almost 1 / 3 of Democrats in the house - and has been adopted by over 235 organizations in 40 countries of the European Union, as well as Many citizens, religious organizations and medical care.

Third, any reform of the health plan, private insurance kills defective. A. Incitement is a private insurance on the head. Less a private health insurance does not provide for the same premium, the more they earn. Most of us have been the case with “Sicko” insurance companies to pay bonuses to staff members, claims rejected by the health sector sick. B. With hundreds or thousands of different private insurance, it is impossible to negotiate to reduce costs in a manner consistent with the providers of medical services and other businesses. A unique system of order has an influence on the market cost of governing. C. Leading private insurance is a colossal waste of money. Administrative costs for illness are 2-3%. Approximately 30% of private insurance premiums are overweight, profits, wages and the executive. Doctors and hospitals to deal with large sticks to treat only the rights of a large number of insurance companies. More than 20% of the income of private doctors, to pay for such personnel. Overall, the administrative costs for private insurance of more than $ 400 billion per year. That.s enough for all non without increasing taxes.

Fourthly, as Barack Obama said, “Change is difficult.” You do not need fundamental social changes to forgo fundamental principles, without burning a coup. Let me say again that you do not begin desist fundamental principles, without burning a coup. This is the problem with the approach of the leading democratic presidential candidate and some progressives, like those who spoke this morning of the U.S. campaign for the future direction of the Panel of Jacob Hacker. Before the political struggle itself begins to ask the mass movement for universal health care, the principle of non-for-profit universal health care is based on a plan of the employer and different mandates to buy private health insurance (even if it is with an alternative public). George Lakoff’s Rock Ridge Institute calls this approach “In advance Surrender.”

Fifth, Congress Member Conyers view, the problem of the universality of health care in Congress living for many years, while others have dropped out. John Edwards, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama deserves to place health reform at the top of the agenda of domestic policy for the next President. But his plans are very cleanly enough. There is no reason that the mass movements for Universal Health Care, pursuant to fall behind their proposals. We can at a Democraric president and the Congress to drag on the proposals presented by the candidate for the presidency.
